Pre-Schools

The section was established by Council in 1962. Our mandate is to mobilize, coordinate and monitor activities of early childhood development within the city, in accordance with national policy of Zimbabwe.

The section is committed to providing quality, effective, sustainable and holistic programmes for children aged two to seven years.

The pre schools were handed over top the communities in 1998 and in 2001 the boards and associations was approved to function with the primary objective of:

  • Advocating and making policy recommendations on children's rights and other issues that affect the welfare of children aged 0 -7 years.
  • Promoting the development and distribution of affordable public information and playing materials.
  • Promoting the liaison and strengthening the networking with member organizations nationally and internationally.

Our vision is to see a city that values and affirms children's education and gives them opportunities to develop to their full potential, in line with their developmental rights and needs.To empower communities to undertake appropriate actions in the provision of E.C.D centres.

Council runs twenty-four Early childhood Development Centres in the western suburbs, by providing various support services and expertise in financial and human resource management.

The following is a list of pre-schools and their enrolments, situated about (15) fifteen kilometers west of the CBD.

Where To Go

Visit your nearest pre-school community centre in the surrounding areas of the western suburb, for information and money saving child programmes.They are the ideal starting point for any child.Plan a school visit or obtain information from area centre managers.

What to See

  1. Cognitive learning which arise in creative play.
  2. Outside play situations with excellent play equipment.
  3. Inside classrooms a balanced range of activities.

How to Become a Member

The Community-Type Pre-School caters for full time or part time programmes, to children between 2-5 years of age.This is a community-type pre-school, in which parental participation has a positive role, in setting up tariffs/fees and coming up with ideas for future development of the centres.Fees vary as per the decision of boards. They range from US$25 to US$70 a term.

Teaching Methods

The enthusiastic teacher uses the child's interest as the basis for teaching and has the aims, objectives and methods well structured, she knows what skills to offer in the following cognitive development, social and emotional development, speech and language development, fine motor skills and gross motor skill development.She is able to plan her activities in the manner that each child realizes his/her full potential as an individual.

This is a sub-section of the Education Section. Council runs twenty four (24) pre-schools in almost all the western suburbs. These are all community based run by School Development Committees with one Council official Co-ordinator. Please visit individual pre-schools listed in Pre-schools.
