Sister Cities

The City of Bulawayo has Sister City relations with a number of Cities in the world and also has Memoranda of Understanding for the development of sister city partnerships. The role of the sister city programme is to promote Bulawayo as an investment destination and promotion of the City in the international local government fora. The aim is to develop global partnerships that allow for the sharing of expertise in local governance, development and strategic international relations for Bulawayo’s growth. As an international player in local governance, the City of Bulawayo continues to cherish and explore City diplomacy for sharing of best practices, collaboration and overall development of Bulawayo.

Terms of Reference for Sister City programmes are as follows:

  • 1. Co- operation encourages and facilitates contacts between the two sister cities,
  • 2. Promotes effective co-operation,
  • 3. Exchange of ideas and
  • 4. Collectively develop projects and identify sources of funding for projects and initiatives etc.

All Sister city partnerships are based on formal cooperation agreements/memorandums of understanding that focus on the following areas of cooperation:

  • Urban Regeneration
  • Transportation and Mobility Management
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Information Communication Technology Initiatives
  • Cultural Exchange Initiatives
  • Development Related Projects

  • Housing and Community Development

The City of Bulawayo is currently twinned with the City of Durban - EThekwini (South Africa ), Aberdeen (Scotland ) and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Polokwane Municipality (South Africa ).

The twinning of cities or Sister Cities across international boundaries are key in supporting cultural friendship, economic exchanges and partnerships. Establishment of twinning relations between cities is a recognised international programme that is globally acknowledged.
