WASHen Critical for Development

The water, sanitation and energy sectors are critical for spearheading economic growth and social development, Hon Minister of state in the Vice President’s Office CC Sibanda said.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice President, Hon Emerson Mnangagwa who was meant to officially open the WASHen 2015 Conference, Hon Sibanda said that the urgency of providing clean water was also emphasised in the Zimbabwean constitution and also in the ZimASSET.

He added that there was thus need for players in the WASH sector to come up with time framed solutions for sustainable development in Zimbabwe. He emphasised that the conference and expo provided an opportunity to also come up with time framed solutions for sustainable development.

“The proceedings constitute a legacy issue that will transcend to other generations,” said Hon Sibanda.

Speaking at the same function, Minister of Water and Environment, Oppah Muchinguri - Kashiri said that water, sanitation and energy issues were topical in the country and worldwide creating opportunities for investment. She added that her ministry sought to create private public partnerships that would facilitate for investment and prioritisation of water, sanitation and energy issues in the country.


She added that the Ministry noted the importance of water management hence the development of the National Water Policy in 2013 to guide water provisions and sanitation. She also further noted that the ministry was also concerned about the pollution of water and sought the realignment of conflicting laws in line with the Zimbabwean constitution in a bid to mitigate pollution.
