PUBLIC NOTICE – OPEN AIR BRAAING

The City of Bulawayo acknowledges a new trend in food preparation in the form of open air braaing. As such the City will be regulating open air braaiing with effect from the 1st of May 2024. Braaing shall be permitted in premises which are holders of Certificates of Registration from the Health Services Department in terms of the Bulawayo (Registration of Premises) by laws.

Please note that the following shall apply to all premises that are braaing for the general public;

1. AREA

  1. At least 20m2 preparation area to be provided for braaing purposes. The area shall include the preparation and sitting area.
  2. The area must be clearly dermacated.

2. DUST PROOFING

  1. A hand washing basin shall be provided with soap and water..
  2. A sink shall be provided with running water.
  3. Ashes and firewood off cuts to be disposed of properly.

3.SANITARY REQUIREMENTS

  1. The entire surface to be paved to the satisfaction of the Health Services Department.
  2. Braai area to have roof cover to protect it from weather elements.

4.FITTINGS AND FIXTURES

  1. There shall be provision of an impervious, washable working table.
  2. Cutting boards shall be provided for the braaing activity.
  3. A braai stand shall be provided..
  4. Adequate closable refuse receptacles shall be provided for left-over food.

5.LEGAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. The braaing activity shall be registered with the City of Bulawayo Health Services Department.
  2. An inspection fee which shall be reviewed from time to time shall be paid at the inception of the braai activity.
  3. A sketch plan for the braai area shall be submitted to the City of Bulawayo Health Services Department.
  4. A copy of the current certificate of registration shall be submitted together with the application for the braai activity
  5. Operator shall ensure that the entrance to the braai area shall not interfere with the already existing operations.

6.GENERAL FIRE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR BRAAI AREA

  1. Ensure there are no combustible materials within the proximity of the braai area..
  2. Braai should be consistently checked when not in use.
  3. Fires must be completely extinguished after braaing
  4. Ensure all braai activities are carried out well away from window openings and doors.
  5. If flammable gas such as liquified petroleum gas is used for braaing, handle the equipment with great care and according to the supplier’s or manufacturer’s instructions.

All premises operating braai areas are required to comply with the above requirements by the 1st of June 2024.
