Operationalisation of Bulk Markets

OPERATIONALIZATION OF THE INITIAL 5 BULK FRESH FARM PRODUCE WHOLESALE DELIVERY SITES IN HIGH DENSITY SUBURBAN SHOPPING CENTRES

The City of Bulawayo, in its quest to decentralize bulk fresh farm produce wholesalers and decongest the Central Business District, is pleased to announce that the first 5 (five) became operational on the 13th May 2020.

The decentralization move seeks to bring food markets closer to consumers, reduce cost of doing business, safety and security of girl child and mothers who have to endure waking up early morning hours to access public transport to the markets.

IDENTITY AND LOCATION OF BULK DELIVERY SITES

Council has identified the initial five (5) bulk delivery sites as follows:

  1. Sekusile Nkulumane Bus Terminus
  2. Emganwini Mupedzanhamo Association
  3. Old Pumula Vegetables Market
  4. New Magwegwe Market
  5. Cowdray Park Bus Terminus Market

OPERATOR OF THE BULK DELIVERY SITES

Council has allocated all the bulk delivery sites to an Association of Farmers Markets currently delivering their produce to the existing food markets in the Central Business District. The operator is Bulawayo Association of Farmers Markets (BAFM) and it is open to new membership in the farming and vegetable wholesale community.

OPERATING FRAMEWORK

  1. The wholesalers will be operating in a fenced-off area for trucks while Council is preparing permanent structures.
  2. The wholesale shall be open for licensed operators and bulk purchases.
  3. Only members of the association shall be allowed to bring in delivery trucks.
  4. Council and other security stakeholders will police the markets to eliminate illegal sales such as boot sales.
