In June 1991, the Centre for Women’s Global Leadership alongside participants of the first Women’s Global Institute on Women, Violence and Human Rights, called for a global campaign of Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence .
The international days ware formally recognized by the United Nations in 1999 and 25 November to 10 December .The days were specifically set aside to fall in between the International day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls 25th November which is day one.
This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961), and, the last day is 10th December which is the Human Rights Day because women`s right are also human rights.
