The City of Bulawayo has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Environmental Management Agency to enhance environmental stewardship and improve cleanliness of the City.
The MOU is a clear display of the City’s commitment to environmental protection and makes strides towards Bulawayo’s effort to safeguard its legacy of being one of the cleanest cities in Africa.
Furthermore, the collaboration is in line with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pertaining to the environment- (SDG11) Sustainable cities and communities, (SDG13) climate action,(SDG15)life on land and (SDG 17) partnerships for the goals.
The MOU further demonstrates the two organisations commitment to the strengthening of a harmonious and cooperative relationship that fosters cleanliness of the city’s environment.

The Memorandum of Understanding is complemented by the city’s Local Environmental Action Plan (LEAP), the blueprint for environmental management that advocates for multi stakeholder participation in the creation of a sustainable environment.
The City is also expected to review and update its By-Laws to incorporate emerging environmental issues.
The Environmental Management Agency will support training and capacity building workshops for the Council and improve networking locally, regionally and internationally as well as jointly prepare proposals for funding of projects.
Both parties will work towards the ISO Certification of the City.
