Library Services

Notes

The Library Service dates back to 1959 when the first "library" was opened at an old disused church hall in Makokoba. The founder Librarian was Mrs. Karen V. Jessen, a Danish Librarian.

There are 9 libraries run by City Council. These are headquartered at Mzilikazi and the most senior person is the Senior Librarian followed by a librarian.

Each library is manned by branch librarian assisted by library assistant. These are all in the western suburbs. There is a backlog of construction of libraries in the newer suburbs e.g Cowdray Park, Emganwini, Pumula South. There is need for the Municipal Library Service to be computerized. Council should take bold and positive steps to computerize its library service so as to keep abreast of developments in the world of technology and information provision. Computerization should no longer be regarded as a luxury but a dire necessity.
